BEIJING, China (AP) - China sentenced to life imprisonment a US citizen aged 78 on Monday for spying.
John Shing-Wan Leung who has a permanent residence in Hong Kong was arrested by the counterintelligence agency on April 15, 2021 in the city of Suzhou in the south-east. The intermediate court of Suzhou announced Leung’s sentence on social media but did not give any details.
These investigations and trials take place behind closed doors, and very little information is released to the public.
The relationship between Washington and Beijing has reached a historic low due to disputes over technology, trade, human rights, and China's aggressive attitude towards its territorial claims.
