In China, a Detention and a New Espionage Law Have Businesses Worried

Foreign companies are concerned about the safety of their staffs in China and the reliability of Beijings pledges that China is open for business.

BEIJING - Hiroshi Nishiyama is a senior Japanese executive with Astellas Pharma Inc., and a prominent businessman in his country's Chinese circles. He spent the last part of March wrapping up his work and preparing for his return home.

He never made the trip. Nishiyama vanished on his supposed last day in China. China's Foreign Ministry announced a few days later that he was accused of espionage, and had been detained.
