Eating an anti-inflammatory diet of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables instead of red and processed meats and ultraprocessed foods lowered the risk of dementia by 31%, according to a new study. This benefit was observed even among individuals with conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or stroke. The research suggests that following an anti-inflammatory diet can reduce the risk of dementia and delay its onset, as well as potentially improve brain health by lowering levels of brain biomarkers associated with neurodegeneration and vascular injury. While the study does not establish cause and effect, it aligns with existing research linking dietary inflammation to brain health.
