Even though summer is winding down, it’s important to continue using sunscreen for protection against skin cancer and premature aging. The safety and necessity of sunscreen have been debated due to concerns raised by social media influencers and the discovery of a carcinogen in some sunscreens. The link between sun exposure and skin cancer is well established, with ultraviolet radiation believed to cause a majority of skin cancers. Sunscreen has been found to lower the risk of skin cancer, especially melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The FDA has requested more safety data on sunscreen ingredients. There are two types of sunscreens: mineral and chemical. Mineral sunscreens form a barrier on the skin, while chemical sunscreens convert UV radiation into heat. Some concerns have been raised about the safety of certain sunscreen ingredients, and more research is needed. It’s important to demand safer products and regulations to protect against endocrine disruptors and skin cancer.
