Olympic Opening Ceremony to kick off on Paris' River Seine amid rail line disruption
French rail lines were targeted by coordinated acts of sabotage just before the Olympic torch relay concluded and the Opening Ceremony began. The high-speed train lines, including Atlantic, Northern, and Eastern lines, experienced disruptions due to arson and damage to railway facilities. The railway network had to divert and cancel numerous trains, causing significant disruptions. Travelers were advised to postpone their trips and avoid going to the stations. Additionally, the Rémi Train Centre Val de Loire announced disruptions in train lines until at least Monday due to a fire near the tracks in Courtalain.
Enhanced security measures have been implemented in Paris for the Opening Ceremony. With a large number of spectators and various heads of state and government attending the ceremony, about 45,000 police officers and 18,000 military personnel have been deployed in the city. Metro stations and bridges will be closed, and airspace restrictions will be in place. The CEO of Paris 2024 emphasized the importance of security for a successful celebration. The Games are taking place amidst global tensions and the CEO believes that the Olympics showcase the ability to come together and promote peace.
