Streamline Scientific, Molecular Designs open Perimeter Park facility

Birmingham's Streamline Scientific and Molecular Designs (formerly Assurance Scientific Labs) has moved to a new facility at Perimeter Park.

The new location has a space of 7,000 square feet for manufacturing, R&D and research. A 25,000-square foot distribution facility is also available. Both facilities are ISO-certified and feature clean room manufacturing, negative pressure R&D labs, six Tecan Filler Machines, and 500 square foot of cold chain storage.

A spokesperson for the BBJ said that the investment in the new facility located at 2 Perimeter Park S. Suite 160, was $10 million. The spokesperson stated that the modern facility would expand the capabilities of customers and help the organizations to continue growing.

The original Acton Road facility is still in operation.

About 130 people are employed by the companies.

Due to their dissatisfaction of the lab market and finding it profitable, Dr. Ty Thomas and Chad Austin co-founded Assurance Scientific Labs, now Streamline Scientific and Molecular Designs.

According to its website, Streamline Scientific aims at optimizing lab space and offers to use its own labs. It develops tests with physicians and other laboratories and sells ingredients that it manufactures.

Molecular Designs aims at making molecular technology that is more cost-effective, easy to use and easier to understand. According to its website, it helps customers get lower prices on research assays while improving workflow. It offers pathogen tests in eight different panels. "Many more panels are being developed," the site states. The company's site states that its assays run on most PCR systems, and the high analytical sensitivity assays detect DNA or RNA as low as one to five copies, depending on customer needs.
