Job Data Quirks

The numbers reveal some interesting nuances about the American workforce. There are more cashiers in the US economy (2) than there are artists, writers and designers (1). The number of customer service agents is the same as that of the entire Scientific and Legal field combined (2).

The fact that so few people work in the industry is perhaps the most intriguing.

Farming, fishing & forestry

Industry is a primary sector that's crucial. BLS data estimates that there are only a little more than 450,000 farm workers, fishers, and foresters.

It's important to note that the BLS only collects information from "nonfarm" establishments. This explains the low estimate of their category which is nearly

one-sixth

USDA estimates. For a complete explanation, please see the data note that follows this article.

What is the American Workforce changing?

The American workforce has changed over the past five years. Thirteen of the 22 listed groups saw a decrease in their numbers.

Growth

In terms of employment, nine countries have seen a decline, while one has remained flat.

The biggest gainer is

Health Support

Medical assistants, Care Aides, Orderlies, etc. This grew by 65 percent. The timeline of growth shows a picture that is not consistent: employment increased between 2018 and 2019 and then fell briefly in 2020. It has now risen again from 2021-2022.

Another big winner is

Transport

Business & Finance and Management also saw steady increases in 2018.

The other hand

Hospitality

The number of people who were infected dropped by 48%, which is not surprising considering the COVID-19 epidemic and the growth of tech companies such as Airbnb.

Meanwhile,

Office & Admin

The number of employees in this group has decreased by 15%, despite the fact that it is the largest employer in the nation. This group's employment declined steadily from 2018-2021 but saw a slight increase between 2021-2022.

The future of American workers is a major concern, particularly in the workforce.

The AI Revolution is here

This is a technology that has captured the imagination, and could soon affect the economy. Administrative jobs, the largest category of employment, are most at risk because many office tasks can now be automated using increasingly sophisticated AI tools.

Will AI have the same impact on the global economy as the Industrial Revolution? Will it be as disruptive as the outsourcing of manufacturing out of the U.S.

Will AI be a seamless addition to the American workforce? Or will it merely enhance productivity and profits?
